How to Add a Watermark to a PDF (Text or Image)
Brand your PDFs with text or image watermarks — custom opacity, position, and rotation — completely free in your browser.
Whether you're protecting intellectual property, marking drafts, or branding client deliverables, watermarking a PDF takes less than 60 seconds with the right tool.
Two Types of PDF Watermarks
- Text watermarks: "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", your company name, a copyright notice. Lightweight, fully customisable.
- Image watermarks: A semi-transparent company logo overlay. More visually prominent but adds file size.
Adding a Watermark with PDFForge
- Open the Add Watermark tool
- Upload your PDF
- Choose text or image watermark
- For text: enter your watermark text, choose font, size, and colour
- Adjust position: center, diagonal, or custom X/Y coordinates
- Set opacity: 10–20% for subtle branding, 30–50% for draft marking
- Set rotation: 45° diagonal is the professional standard
- Choose which pages: all pages, or specific pages only
- Apply and download
Watermark Best Practices
- For DRAFT documents: Red, 35% opacity, diagonal, large font (80–100pt). Impossible to miss.
- For brand/copyright: Company name, 15% opacity, bottom-right corner. Subtle but present.
- For CONFIDENTIAL documents: Light grey, 25% opacity, diagonal repeat. Professional appearance.
- For client deliverables: Client name in corner, 20% opacity. Personalises each copy and helps identify leaks.
Can Watermarks Be Removed?
Text-layer watermarks added by PDF tools can be removed by other tools if the PDF structure allows it. Flattened watermarks (where the watermark is merged into the page content stream) are significantly harder to remove cleanly. PDFForge's watermark tool creates annotation-layer watermarks — effective for deterrence and marking, but not impossible to remove with advanced tools.
For maximum watermark persistence, combine with password protection that prevents editing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will watermarks affect the text or images behind them?
No. Watermarks are an overlay layer — underlying content is unchanged.
Can I watermark only specific pages?
Yes — PDFForge allows page range selection for watermarks.
Can I use my company logo as a watermark?
Yes — upload a PNG with transparent background for the cleanest logo watermark result.
